Privacy and cookies

This site counts visits only if you say yes. Here is what that means, and how to change your mind.

If you accept

Google Analytics counts the visit

The page loads Google Analytics 4. It records which pages you open, how long you spend on them, whether you scroll to the end, which links you follow to other sites, the site that sent you here, your device and browser, and a rough location (country and city) that Google works out from your connection.

It sets two cookies, _ga and _ga_ZVDSQHZ2Q2, on northafricanorigins.com only. They last 13 months.

Advertising features are off: no advertising cookies, no Google signals, no personalised ads. The site does not send Google Analytics your name, your email or anything you type in a form.

If you refuse, nothing is counted

Nothing loads from Google Analytics and no cookie is set.

Either way, your answer is kept in your browser’s local storage for six months. It is not a cookie and it is not sent anywhere. After six months the question comes back.

Change your mind

Change your answer at any time

The Cookies button at the bottom of every page brings the question back. Refusing after you accepted switches the counting off and deletes both cookies. Clearing this site’s data in your browser does the same, and you are asked again on your next visit.

Whatever you answer

Other services these pages use

  • Google Fonts. The typefaces come from Google’s servers, so your browser asks Google for them on each page, as it would on any site that uses them. No cookie is set.
  • GitHub Pages. GitHub hosts the site and may keep logs of visitors’ IP addresses to keep its service secure.
  • Formspree. The contact and updates forms send what you type to Formspree, which forwards it by email. Nothing is stored on this site.

Questions about any of this: contact.
